Macclesfield trials club Kelcoat final championship round .

The final trial at Rough Heyes quarry before the summer break was also the final round of the Kelcoat (Leek) Trial’s bike championship. In the Expert Class, Mike Roberts was already assured of the championship but nonetheless pulled out all the stops to take yet another premier award on a score of 8.  His nearest rival on the day, Mark Atkinson, was second on 14. Terry (Billy) Craig was a non-starter but his previous good results had assured him of runner-up spot in the championship.

The Inter championship was won by Neil Butterworth with Matthew Treweek in second place overall. These places were reversed on the day with Matt beating Neil by just 2 marks with scores of 6 and 8 respectively. Other riders posting good rides on this route were from different ends of the age scale with young Brad Bullock losing just 5 - exactly the same scores as veteran Mike Leddy and 0/40 Gavin Walker. Gavin’s 5 was on the very first lap, on section 2.

On the middle route three championships are contested, two of which were still up for grabs on the day, the third was already a done deal. It was the normally super tight 0/40 class in which only the minor places were up for grabs with championship winner Ade Bellis assured of a win without turning a wheel. In the still to be decided novice class, Peter Shone had to score 9 points more than local rival Mike Renshaw. He did manage to pip Mike on the day but not by a sufficient point tally to take the championship. The last and very competitive 0/50 class was won by Andy Foot, but a late rally and a cracking ride by Henry Rosenthal on the day pushed the result a lot closer than expected. Henry’s ride was exceptional beating all of the other riders on this route with a score of just 2 marks.

On the 50/50 easy/middle route Carl Braddock on his Yam lost just 2 marks to take his total of wins in this class to 5 out of 6 - an impressive tally of wins as he’s competing against many modern bikes. We need to hamper him further next year, 20 Psi in the back tyre should do it. John Day won the easy route on the day and the championship - looks like a move-up in class might be due here, John. Second in the easy route championship was Paul Glendennings, who somehow manages to fit in riding the Macc trials between frying burgers in the burger van.
