Macclesfield trials report 10-04-09 Rough Heyes quarry, Bosley, Nr Macclesfield

Over 100 riders tackled 4 laps of 10 sections at the ever popular Rough Heyes quarry venue on what was a first for the Macclesfield club, running a trial on a Bank Holiday Friday. Unsure of the popularity of a Good Friday trial, the club went ahead and organised the event which was originally scheduled to run on the same day as the Bemrose National back in March. As half the club’s stalwarts are required to run the locally organised Bemrose the move to Good Friday was seen as the only viable date available. As ever the draw of a popular venue, sensible sections, choice of three routes and two 50/50 options was more than enough to gain a cracking entry of 106 riders. Or maybe it was none of the above reasons and the good entry was just down to Tegan’s cheese burgers!

On the hard route Mike Roberts (9) just saw of the challenge of Chris Koch (11) by 2 marks and Mark Atkinson (12) by 3. Mike gained the upper hand on section 1 with a score of 1 to Chris’s 4 but Mark went clean. Chris went on to drop 2 more at the tricky section 2 whilst Mike went clean and Mark lost his first dab. Section 3 took marks off none of the top 3 nor did sections 5, 6, or 10. Section 4 saw Chris pull a couple back when he went clean compared to Mark’s 2 and Mike’s 3. Mike and Mark both dropped 1 on section 7 but it was 8 that really defined who would go home with the premier award as Mark lost 7 Chris 5 and Mike recorded only 4.

On the 50/50 middle / hard route and returning for his second trial this year, from all the way down in Biggleswade, Bedfordshire was Inter rider Nick Wilford on 22 beating guest rider Toby Eyre who had the somewhat shorter trip of about a mile to drop his very respectable 31.

On the middle route Carl Machin on 19 was almost 10 points ahead of a pack of 10 riders who where only separated by 9 points or less. Notable amongst these was 0/50 rider Andy Foot on 32 and Novices Steve Carthy (31) and Ashley Ashworth on 32.

The 50/50 easy/middle route was to see Yamaha mounted Carl Braddock take a comfortable victory, dropping less than a third of the marks of closest rivals with a measly score of 5. Carl also recorded the lowest score of any rider on the tricky middle route through section 2. On the easy route Ron Kenyon and Robert Blackburn both lost 10 marks.
