Macclesfield trials club report Bill Brown 29-04-06

A Trial in the dry on a Saturday night at Rough Heys quarry must be as rare as rocking horse bio-degradable produce, but that’s what tempted 60 plus riders this bank Holiday weekend.

The trial incorporated the Len Eyre Trophy and the final round of the Kelcoat (Trials bike, Leek) championship. Ten sections were laid out on a shorter than normal lap and all were ridden four times. In the expert class Mark Reynolds took the overall win with a score of 3 from Mike Roberts. Mike still went home happy with his evenings work as second was more than enough to retain his expert club championship trophy.

In the inters none of the top two championship riders turned up so it was left to Scorpa rider Lee Hutchinson (20) to take the win. Daniel Bower had scored sufficient points in earlier rounds to take the inter trophy in his first year in that class. Will Emmott was best youth on his 125 Gas Gas with a score of 30.

Certainly the most competitive of all the classes in the Kelcoat championship is the 0/40 class and this year was no different as Peter Hallam on his trusty Yamaha took the overall win from Tim Capper. On the night it was just as close but this time between Peter and Sheffield rider and macc trial regular Chris Clarke. Chris on his Bultaco lost only 3 marks to take the win on the night, a dab on section 7, 8 and the difficult section 10, compared to Peters 6 marks lost. Another veteran rider and Bemrose stalwart Kev Stannard in the 0/50 class also kept his score in single figures with 8. This was Kev’s only ride in the championship this year and he spoilt Henry Rosenthal’s clean sweep of wins in the previous 4 rounds but the 80 points accumulated were more than enough to take a well deserved 0/50 championship trophy.

In the Novice class the overall Championship winner was Karl Green who missed the Macclesfield trial to watch the Scottish 6 day trial, safe in the knowledge that no one could overtake him. There was a battle for second place between Phil Coombes and Dave Matthews .Dave needed to win the class and see Phil score less than 15 points but It was not to be Dave’s night as Phil scored  15 points to take second, beating Dave on the night and in the championship.
